first post!

I guess the proper way to christen any blog is with an introduction, so hello!  I'm Rebecca, and this is my blog!

The first thing I should probably explain is the url- hablara.  It comes from the Spanish verb hablar, which means "to talk".  If it was accented (hablará) it could be translated to "she will talk." And isn't that really the point of any blog? Just me, talking via a computer to the vast world of the Internet? So I figured it was fitting, since this is sort of a way for me to talk, to get my voice out.

Secondly, some background on me!  Without going into too much detail, I'm a recent graduate of Georgia Tech, with a bachelor of science in Applied Languages and Intercultural Studies, with a concentration in Spanish.  I spent the summer of 2011 studying abroad in Mexico City and Madrid and it was one of the greatest experiences of my life. I also took up to the 2000 level in both French and German, and taught myself some basic Portuguese way back in the days of high school for my senior project.  That probably makes me seem like a huge language nerd, and while that's actually fairly true, it's not the only thing I love!

Television is probably my biggest interest.  I have at least one TV show I watch pretty much every day of the week, and I spend some nights glued to my TV from 8 PM to 10 PM.  My favorite shows are my Thursday night NBC comedies, specifically Parks and Recreation, and then a couple dramas (Doctor Who and Game of Thrones).  As some of my friends can tell you, if you start a conversation with me about one of my shows, beware- it will be one of the most enthusiastic conversations you've ever had.

The next thing I'm most enthusiastic about would probably have to be sports.  My favorite is soccer- I am a huge fan of US Soccer, both the men's and women's teams, and have been since the late 90s when I started playing for local rec teams.  I have three caps from both men's and women's games (two for the MNT and one for the WNT) and hope to be able to add to that in the future.  My favorite club team is Real Madrid, so one of the highlights of my study abroad trip to Spain was when I got to tour the Bernabeu.  I also love most sports in the Olympics, both winter and summer, but especially swimming.  I swam through high school and the Olympics this summer actually inspired me to get back in the pool to start getting in shape, and once I get settled in somewhere I'll hopefully be able to join a Masters swim team and start competing again.

I have a lot of other interests- I actually started a blog for my crocheting, but a warm fall sort of slowed my desire to do that.  I enjoy playing Skyrim, hanging out with my dog, and eating nachos, among other things.  And I sort of figured that as I was writing this out, I would be able to figure out an area that I wanted to focus my blog on, but I haven't actually been able to think of anything.  So I think I'll leave that up to you guys, my readers (which I will hopefully have!)...let me know what you want me to write a blog about!  I may write up something about my Black Friday experiences, since it's topical right now, but if you have any other ideas please let me know!

  1. You should crochet me a hat, or a scarf, or gloves, or slippers, or anything. :D

    1. Maybe! I feel like I owe a ton of people stuff, but I haven't really been in the mood to crochet lately. Maybe if it actually stays cold I'll feel more up to it.
